Green Party of Alameda County Council
meeting. Call us at 644-2293 for more details.
November 8, 2001
On November 8th, 2001 the Federal
Election Commission unanimously approved a request from the
Green Party of the United States to be recognized as the national
committee of the Green Party.
The national committee is the organization
which oversees the day-to-day affairs of a political party
at the national level and nominates candidates for President
and Vice President.
This long-developing and much anticipated
recognition is a major milestone in U.S. Green organizing,
as U.S. Greens have gone from organizing local activist groups
in the 1980s, to state Green parties in the 1990s, to a national
Green Party in 2001.
The formation of the Green Party
of the United States was itself announced on July 30, 2001,
at a press conference at the Green Party's Santa Monica, California
office.
Thursday, November 8

the families of innocent victims in New York, Washington,
Afghanistan and to support alternatives to war, the right
to principled dissent, and an end to racial profiling.
In casting her lone
vote against the open-ended use of military force, Representative
Barbara Lee (D-9th Congressional District, California) quoted
from a statement made by a member of the clergy at the National

that we deplore."

Dear California Greens,
In June 2001 we won our first election
ever in the City of Los Angeles, as we elected Nancy Pearlman
to the Los Angeles Community College District Board.
Now we have an enormous opportunity
to elect a Green to the Los Angeles City Council! Denise Munro
Robb, Coordinator for the Los Angeles Greens, is running in
a special election for the Los Angeles City Council 4th District
seat taking place on September 11.
She has been endorsed by Ralph Nader,
Bonnie Raitt, Medea Benjamin, Martin Sheen, Santa Monica Mayor
Mike Feinstein, Dan and Carrie Hamburg, City Councilman Kevin
McKeown, Sara Amir, author Mike Davis, former presidential
candidate John Anderson and many others.
We need your help so that Denise
can become the first Green Party candidate in the country
to qualify for $25,000 in local public matching funds -- IF
she can raise at least that much money by September 1. Denise
has already raised over $15,000 and more local fundraising
is underway -- so we're hoping we can reach our goal with
just a little additional help from Greens around the state!
Please do everything you can to help
out (and if you can spend a few days -- or more -- in Los
Angeles volunteering that would be greatly appreciated as
well)!
To make a donation please send your
check to:
Denise Munro Robb for City Council,
5850 W. Third St. #356,
Los Angeles, CA 90036.
(The maximum donation is $1,000 and
the first $250 of each donation qualifies to be matched. As
required by state law, please note your occupation and employer.)
Every donation, no matter what you
can afford, is critical!
If you send your check after August
26, please e-mail the campaign and tell us it's on it's way:
emails@d...
To volunteer, either e-mail us or
call us at: 213-745-ROBB.
Denise is starting to get increased
media attention -- there is a feature on her coming up in
the Los Angeles Times -- and her July 29 fundraiser with Jello
Biafra went very well.
Denise is the President and Co-Founder
of the Miracle Mile Action Committee, a community organization
that just had another victory in preserving the historic,
affordable buildings in her neighborhood from the bulldozers
of the developers.
When Denise was Executive Director
for the Southern California chapter of Americans for Democratic
Action (ADA) she fought for campaign finance reform, preservation
of all 1,100 acres of the Ballona Wetlands (a major issue
for Los Angeles environmentalists), against nuclear power,
against Proposition 187, and much more.
Her district includes the communities
of Hollywood, North Hollywood, Studio City, Los Feliz, Silver
Lake, Hancock Park, Miracle Mile and the Wilshire District.
Denise is fighting for the re-greening
of the Los Angeles River, for more non-polluting buses and
light rail, elimination of video billboards, greater police
accountability (of the LAPD), compliance with the consent
decree, community based policing, electoral reform including
instant runoff and touch screen voting and much more.
For more information, please see
Denise's campaign website www.DeniseMunroRobb.com
Please join with us in helping Denise
Robb to make Green Party history. Please make your maximum
contribution to Denise's campaign today. By working together,
we WILL Green California!
Sincerely,
Mike Feinstein Mayor of Santa Monica

From
Local Elections to the Presidency 2000 was a year of spectacular
growth for the Green Party in the United States. Greens ran
more candidates, received more votes, elected more people,
registered more Green voters, and achieved ballot status in
more states than ever before.
The
Green Party's growth was also about more than just numbers.
Public consciousness about the Greens increased many fold
- from the boardrooms of the New York Times and Washington
Post, to the classrooms of highschools and universities across
the nation. In just a few short years, the Green Party has
become a meaningful part of the nation's political lexicon.
And among the nation's young, Greens are increasingly a preferred
choice.
In
addition to electoral growth, the Green Party grew organizationally
in 2000, enjoying an enormous leap in skills, experience and
contacts. This came from within, as internal leadership has
developed. It also came from without, as new talent--attracted
by the party's values, growth and potential--has joined the
party, deciding for themselves that it was finally time for
independent third party politics.
Many
Greens even earned a living as activists in 2000, and some
will not be going back to conventional careers as a result.
Much more than in 1996, Greens also worked together nationally
on a common electoral project, building increased cohesiveness
and professionalism in their grassroots structure. This proved
to be an invaluable, maturing experience for the growing movement.
On
the presidential level, the Ralph Nader/Winona LaDuke campaign
helped make history--partly by helping create one of the most
narrow and controversial presidential elections in U.S. history.
The closeness of that election--and the controversy it generated
- has unexpectedly opened a door for potentially historic
electoral reform. Everything from voting machines to voting
systems is now on the table for consideration, including Green
goals of Instant Run-off Voting (IRV) and proportional representation.
In
sum, the Greens' mixed strategy--of an emphasis on municipal
races, combined with selected state and federal races, along
with pursuing proportional representation and IRV--is succeeding.
The party continues to grow on all levels With the nation
a generational/demographic shift away from a very different
electorate--one without deep historical ties to the traditional
major parties--the Greens' prospects only continue to look
better with time.
