5th General Election
December 2002

The November 5, 2002 election
saw record results for the seven candidates of the statewide
Green Party slate, continuing the steady upward trend
in Green electoral results since 1998. Each matched or
came in well above the previous record for a California
statewide race (3.9% to 5.8%), with vote totals ranging
from about 275,000 to 417,100. Laura Wells, running for
Controller, was the highest vote getter with 5.8%. Since
the Greens have just over 155,000 registered voters, not
all of whom voted, it is clear that hundreds of thousands
of Californians who are not registered Green liked what
we had to offer. In contrast, Democrats have about 6.5
million voters, but their highest vote getter got just
over 3.5 million votes... Whole

Oakland's Measure EE, Just Cause
Eviction Protection, was narrowly approved by voters on
November 5 -- 51% to 49%. Measure EE had been the top
local electoral priority for Oakland Greens, who turned
out scores of volunteers to work on the campaign. It's
good that we (and many other organizations) worked so
hard on the campaign -- given the closeness of the election,
it's clear that every contribution which was made to the
effort was critical!... Whole

On December 3rd, the results
of a run-off election in Berkeley for the 8th District
City Council seat were announced. Gordon Wozniak, a research
scientist and long time area resident, defeated his opponent,
student Andy Katz by a healthy sixteen point margin. Wozniak,
who had the endorsement of outgoing council member Polly
Armstrong, nearly avoided the need for a run-off, falling
only 36 votes shy of the 45% needed for an outright victory
in the four way race... Whole

Berkeley's Measure O, which the
Alameda County Greens endorsed, would have required cafés
to served only Fair Trade certified brewed coffee. Passage
of this measure would have put Berkeley once again in
the forefront of economic justice issues. However, the
measure lost big -- gaining only 29.5% of the vote...

Thirty-two California Greens
were elected or re-elected to office in 2002. Sixty-two
California Greens are now in office, a nation-wide record,
and Greens won 50% of the local races for which they ran.
A long-standing emphasis on running for local offices
has been paying off and should encourage more Greens to
run in their communities... Whole

From Salon.com: "Art dealer Doug
Stuber, who ran Ralph Nader's Green party presidential
campaign in North Carolina in 2000, was barred last month
from getting on a flight to Hamburg, Germany, where he
was going on business 'They took me into a room and questioned
me all about my politics,' Stuber recalls. 'They were
very up on Green party politics, too.' ...Particularly
ominous, he says, was a loose-leaf binder held by the
Secret Service agents...'It had a long list of organizations,
and I was able to recognize the Green Party, Greenpeace,
Amnesty International..." Read

Throughout the country's malls
this week, hordes of holiday shoppers move in a frantic
tide between brand name clothing stores in hallways decked
with plastic garlands. Their eyes -- if they are anything
like myself -- have clouded over after the first twenty
minutes of sensory overload. Each one is lugging a variety
of shopping bags, possibly with a small child in tow begging
for an ice cream cone or hamburger. The economic doomsayers
have predicted a vicious fall from glory if Americans
donıt turn out in numbers -- their credit cards in hand
-- to root for the countryıs home team and defeat the
terrorism, but even those people crowding the local superstore
have reasons other than economic for celebrating...

The Green Party of Alameda
County's premiere publication, the GREEN VOTER GUIDE, is now
gearing up for publication in time for the March 2002 elections.
The process used for
endorsement of candidates is to send questionnaires to the
candidates running for office.
The deadline is fast
approaching for us to be ready to put those hard questions
to the people who would like to represent us in public office.
The VOTER GUIDE uses
volunteers to draft the questions we put to the candidates,
analyze their responses, and write articles for inclusion
inthe paper based on the "endorsement discussion" at the County
Council.
Other production assistance
is appreciated as well, including soliciting for advertisements,
copy editing and proofreading.

On Feb. 7, 2000 we had 10,748 Greens in
Alameda County and now we have 14,599 Greens, an increase
of 36% in less than two years! (Most of the growth happened
during the Fall of 2000 when we grew by approximately 2500
Greens, due of course (primarily) to the Ralph Nader campaign.)
There are now 14,599 Greens registered
County-wide. That's a 5% increase over Sept. 2001. Since there
are 672,197 total voters on the rolls, Greens now represent
2.2% of all voters in Alameda County.
