GROW Conference Call Tuesday, February 26, 2002 Literature: Karine described her vision for having a centralized place to produce literature (outreach materials) to be distributed also envisioning a state-wide newsletter that could be sent out quarterly(?) to help locals who may not have the resources to put out a local newsletter. $100 was suggested for copying costs. $1500 was suggested for seed money for 8000 newsletters; $75- 100 for postage. ========================================= GROW Committee Meeting April 24, 2002 NEWSLETTER -- Laura Wells wants to get involved with the newsletter and wants to meet at the Plenary to discuss (per email to K. Megerdoomian and B. Moore Haines). In another email, Michael Wyman suggested L. Wells be Northern CA coordinator, and K. Megerdoomian be Southern CA coordinator. K. Megerdoomian agrees with this idea. The state gubernatorial slate's newsletter, Green California, has generated a lot of momentum and will serve as our first issue. We may keep the name as well. Next step is to work out logistics (e.g., production, subscriptions, distribution, costs and pricing). M. Borenstein warned not to promise subscribers more issues than we can produce -- a lesson learned from the former GPCA newsletter, Consensus. ========================================= GROW Meeting Minutes May 5, 2002 State Newspaper Green Slate newspaper, "Vote Green 2002" was laid out by former Consensus designer, can serve as template for ongoing newsletter. Goal of having another run before Nov '02. Subscriptions with optional GPCA paraphernalia were suggested. Goal of having newsletter published before plenaries/gatherings to ease distribution. ========================================= GROW Teleconference Minutes July 30, 2002 Committee Reports: Newspaper (Karine): The slate is making plans for publishing another version of the Slate paper in August. Because Laura is overwhelmed, she can't work on two separate papers so Karine and Laura agreed to merge the two and the first issue with the official name Green Focus should be out in mid-September. However, this issue will consist mainly of articles by and about the state slate and it will be a revised version of the earlier state slate newspaper. The December issue will be a normal edition of the newspaper. "Green Focus" is the chosen newspaper name. Corporate Crime is the cover (or front page) article for the September issue but the rest of the newspaper will remain focused on various state candidate issues.. They'll be sending out requests for submissions for the December issue. They talked about subscriptions: Something like $35 to be a GPCA supporter, which will include the Green Focus subscription. Beth suggested that we have a 'low-income' option for those who can't pay $35. Karine said the locals will have access to issues to pass out as they wish. Michael reviewed the history of having newspaper subscriptions, cautioned that they need to be careful not to over-extend. Karine said that she and Laura were aware of this. ========================================= GROW Teleconference Minutes Aug. 27, 2002, 8-9pm September edition of Green Slate / Green Focus state newspaper to be published. (Received on-line from Karine): "The September issue is being handled by the candidate slate and in particular Laura Wells so I would have nothing to report on it personally. If you wish, I could try and get an update for you. However, I have been working on the website for Green Focus which is not official yet but can be found at www.cagreens.org/greenfocus. I will be working on it this week and hopefully we could make it official and available from the cagreens.org front page (as soon as Kendra finishes the online subscription form links to the bank accounts)." (Thunderous applause was heard on the teleconference line in a spontaneous gesture of thanks to Karine for all of her hard and persistent work for GROW!) ========================================= GROW Teleconference Call Tuesday, September 24th at 8:00pm. * Update on Green Focus newspaper -- Karine The latest issue went out around Labor Day. The target for the next one is the next plenary, whenever that is. ========================================= GROW Teleconference Call Tuesday, October 22nd at 8:00pm. * Green Focus Newspaper - Karine The Green Slate newspaper was re-released as the first issue of the Green Focus newsletter. Karine has released the Green Focus website (www.cagreens.org/greenfocus). The submission deadline is December 15 for the January 2003 issue. They're waiting for Ginny Case to put out a call for submissions for the next edition to all county contacts. ========================================= GROW Teleconference Call Tuesday, November 26th, 2002, at 8:00pm. Present: Robyn Oetinger; Stuart Bechman; Dee Brady; Karine Megerdoomian; Michael Borenstein; Barrington Daltrey; Peggy Lewis; Sharon Peterson; Beth Moore Haines (late) 2. Green Focus newspaper (Karine) (10 minutes) Call for article submissions has gone out. I got a call from Michael Wyman, Michael, can you fill us in on that? But we do have some submissions so far; 28 people have subscribed on- line, for a total of $855 subscription funds. I will be handling the subscriptions. Laura Wells will be handling publication, editorials, etc.; but she's been AWOL since the election, so I'm not sure where she's at for the moment. Stuart, Mike Feinstein offered some article suggestions, I'll talk to Laura. How does the editorial board work? Mike Feinstein was interested, but so far it's just Laura and me, is there a process? Michael: The Green Focus newspaper is an official publication of the Green Party of California. Articles should probably be vetted by the Co-Cos, Robyn and Stuart; and any controversial articles should probably be kicked up to the CC. I'm suggesting this only because we don't have a process set up, and I want to ward off any potential problems before they occur. Karine: OK, I haven't done this before. I haven't yet read any of the submissions, we have until the 15th. Mike Feinstein wanted to coordinate with the GPUS newspaper, but given that we're aligning with the plenaries, that may not work. Barrington: If you need article ideas, I'd like to suggest that we talk about setting up a 'shadow government' column, how Greens would handle state issues versus what's really happening. (Not that I want to write it.) I think it would require people who are knowledgeable about the issue Robyn: As far as an editorial board goes, Stuart and I are 'de facto'; but I'd like to have others. Would Sharon be willing to participate? Sharon: I'd love to. Robyn: OK, Great. But shouldn't there be some process for choosing who is on the editorial board? Karine: I asked Peter if he could write something on the campaign, but Tyler said he probably wouldn't be able to do it, he's catching up with his business. Medea said that she might be willing to write an article, but I havn't been in recent touch with her. Also, could we reprint Nader articles? Robyn: I hear that they want money for anything that Nader provides these days. Sharon: Jim Hightower is a good possibility, we've used stuff for our county newsletter. Stuart: Kenny Mostern; production process by Jan. plenary? Karine: Well, Laura is supposed to be involved in production. Can we have a table at the plenary to sell subscriptions? Michael: That's not a problem, at the least we can share space with Clearinghouse. Also, the issue with Mike Wyman, that was a problem of oversight. Any GROW projects need to be run by Robyn and Stuart, of course; but anything involving money, Mike Wyman needs to be CC'd. Mike needs the messages not only for planning but because he's so busy these days. Stuart: But about Kenny Mostern. What's the relationship that he has with the newspaper? Karine: I don't know, that was arranged by Laura. Michael: Let me clarify. There will be no financial arrangement with Mr. Mostern. Robyn: The money from the Green Slate, was any of that available for our publication? Michael: That money went straight to the slate. I don't think the money covered the cost of the publication. I'd also like to recommend that Stuart, Robyn, Karine and Laura control the editorial content of the paper; and Mike Feinstein or others be held in an 'advisory' role only. ========================================= GROW Teleconference Call December 2002
