Greens could gain majority on Bay Area city council in Tuesday's elections; Green Party seeks to add to 34 state offices, 158 Greens are up for election nationwide

GREEN PARTY OF CALIFORNIA PRESS RELEASE

SACRAMENTO (November 02, 2009) - Greens have a genuine chance in Tuesday's abbreviated local and statewide elections to win a majority on a city council just down the road from Richmond where Green Gayle McLaughlin is mayor.

Pam Hartwell-Herrero (www.PamForFairfax.org), if elected, would give Greens a majority on the Fairfax Town Council. Hartwell-Herrero is director of Sustainable Fairfax and other environmental organizations. Greens Larry Bragman and Lew Tremaine already hold council seats.

It would be the third time Greens have held the majority on a city council in California - Arcata (1996-1998) and Sebastopol (2000-2006) have also had Green majorities, according to the Green Party of California.

Greens hold at least 34 elected and appointed posts in the state, including the offices of Supervisor in San Francisco, mayor in Willits, Richmond, Marina City and Sebastopol and numerous city council and education boards.

In others races of note to the GPCA, Green Jeremy Cloward (www.jeremycloward.com) is running in a Special Election in the 10th Congressional District and Dana Silvernale (www.danaforschoolboard.org) is up for school board in Northern Humboldt Union High School District.

Nationwide, 158 Greens are up for election in local and state races Nov. 3.

The Green Party finds itself in a strong position among the other political parties in California and around the U.S. - a majority of Californians and Americans support what only the Green Party offers, including leaving Iraq and Afghanistan now and universal single-payer health care.
