To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing this application to express my interest in becoming a Coordinating Committee member once again. I served for two terms as an at-large member in the early nineties and ran for Secretary of the State of California in 1994. My campaign at the time was on record for receiving the most votes for a third party candidate in the US (record was later broken by Sara Amir, I believe).

SInce serving in the early 90s  I have worked for various online and print media (freelance writer, editor, etc) and in college instruction.  One of the chief assets I think I bring to the CC is my keen understanding of the state and many of its regions. While I was raised in my formative years across military bases in Europe and the US, I've lived and invested my time in Los Angeles and Orange Counties in the south and San Francisco in the North. Presently I live in rural conservative California (90 miles northeast of Chico). I am adaptable and I hope, understanding of the people and their needs in various parts of the state.

Not long ago, I realized---partially through my students---that while many register Green, our party is not as organized as it could be. I seek to make the interaction of Greens across the state a more positive one. We need to grow our internal structure to involve more of the general membership in the work of building --and being excited by--the promise of our party to fill the void left by the mainstream. The young community college students I work with, for example, are really ripe for this change. We need to increase our voter registration and demonstrate that Green values are actually really (at this point in time) mainstream values. We need to develop local candidates to run for local offices.

We should create and communicate a consistent and constant  message to the public that we are the alternative.

You might be wondering about my absence from Green 'public life.' I maintain that I haven't disappeared. Since 1994 I have been working solidly both in Asia and California on various progressive projects, immigration issues, education issues, and local rural politics---which are often ripe areas for misinformation. I have raised two children in the interim as well.

I thank you for your time and consideration. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at writerchickmama@gmail.com.

Warmly,

Margaret Elysia Garcia
